In a move that was widely expected but still surprised some that it actually happened, the New York Knicks renounced the rights to guard Frank Ntilikina on Wednesday, making him a free agent.

Ntilikina was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Knicks and after a solid rookie season for New York, his results fizzled.

The Frenchman had completely fallen out of Tom Thibodeau's rotation a season ago and only played 33 games for the Knicks, averaging less than 10 minutes per contest.

This offseason the Knicks have already resigned Derrick Rose and Alec Burks, both of whom take up time at the point guard position. Immanuel Quickley will be entering his second season and in a brief sample size at Summer League, he has already shown growth in his game and specifically at the one spot.

New York has all that and on top of it, they went out and signed Kemba Walker too. What went from a fairly vacant position at the start of free agency for the Knicks has now turned into a crowded room. It left Ntilikina on the outside looking in.

He'll get a shot somewhere else because he does bring really sound defense to the table and a positive outlook to a locker room. It's even plausible to suggest the best thing for Ntilikina is a change of scenery which he will now get.

The move will undoubtedly upset part of the Knicks fanbase that started the, “Frank Hive,” following Ntilikina being drafted in 2017 but, it was a move that was needed.
