Team USA basketball fell short of their gold medal aspirations on Friday at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, losing in shocking fashion to Germany in the semifinals by a score of 113-111. Following the disappointing outcome, Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves spoke out on the Americans not living up to expectations.

“Obviously super tough. We knew the task ahead and that was to win and we didn't do that so you tip your hat,”  Reaves said, via Nicole Ganglani.

Reaves also gave former Lakers teammate Dennis Schroder his flowers for helping the Germans make the final. Schroder, who signed with the Toronto Raptors in free agency, poured in 17 points and dished out nine assists after a brutal showing in the quarterfinals.

As for Reaves, he had a very respectable tournament for the US. The fact that he was even selected to play for his country was truly a full-circle moment considering his humble beginnings. The 25-year-old showed out versus Germany, pouring in 21 points in 24 minutes of action.

Overall, Austin Reaves averaged 12.4 points in seven outings while shooting over 50% from the field and downtown. The Lakers standout certainly showed he belonged. But, in the semis, the Americans were just frankly outplayed on the boards. Germany's physicality proved to be too much.

In fact, the Germans had 12 offensive boards which led to 25 second-chance points. For what it's worth, the US had just eight.

On a more positive note, Reaves and the States can at least go out and win the bronze medal on Sunday as they face Canada.
