The Los Angeles Lakers upgraded the status of both LeBron James and Anthony Davis to “questionable” for Friday's crucial rematch with the New Orleans Pelicans at Crypto.com Arena.

LeBron has missed the past two games since spraining his left ankle in the team's prior matchup with the Pelicans on Sunday. LeBron said afterward his ankle was in “horrible” shape. He flew home from the team's road trip early to undergo extra treatment in Los Angeles.

Anthony Davis hasn't taken the floor since suffering a mid-foot sprain on Feb. 16. He's missed 37 games this season — one more than he missed in 2020-21. He returned to practice on Monday.

“He’s been working extremely hard and he wants to get back as quickly as possible,” Frank Vogel said. “That’s the energy that we’ve felt from Anthony in terms of once getting cleared and passing certain hurdles. And then, obviously, ramping up his work, letting the increased workload recover and see how it responds. And he’s shown a great urgency to try to get back on the floor.”

The Lakers have lost four in a row, and 14 of 18 games without Davis since the All-Star break. They were non-competitive in a blowout loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday, then fell 122-109 to the Utah Jazz on Thursday.

Los Angeles is 2.5 games back of the Pelicans for the No. 9 seed, and 0.5 games back of the San Antonio Spurs for the final Play-In spot. However, the Lakers don't own the tiebreaker against either team, and the schedule is not on their side. Of the Lakers seven remaining games, six are against playoff teams — including the Pelicans, who have beaten the Lakers twice in the past month. They'll also face the Oklahoma City Thunder (2-1 vs. LA this season) on the second leg of a back-to-back. The Spurs, meanwhile, will enjoy two home games against the Portland Trail Blazers this weekend.

“It’s up to the medical team,” Vogel said Thursday about the chances LeBron and AD could be ready for New Orleans. “If there’s any chance guys can be out there, they will be.”

LeBron is averaging a league-leading 30.1 points per game in 2021-22. He needs to play three more games to qualify for the scoring title — which he's gunning to be the oldest player in NBA history to win.

Wenyen Gabriel, also nursing a sprained ankle, is listed as questionable, too.
