LeBron James is no stranger to backlash in response to his actions on and off the court, so he can relate to what Serena Williams recently went through during the US Open earlier this month. Williams became upset with chair umpire Carlos Ramos during her match, and her outburst cost her a game penalty before she wound up losing the match to Naomi Osaka in straight sets.

James believes the whole situation goes much deeper than just that moment and that match. In an interview with Marisa Guthrie of the Hollywood Reporter, LeBron had this to say of the Williams drama:

“Being an African-American woman playing in a predominantly white sport, (Williams) is dealing with so much more,” James said in the interview with Guthrie. “I have no idea what was going on in her head, but I feel that struggle.”

He went on:

LeBron has become more and more outspoken on these type of issues in the past few years, and he seems to be rallying behind others who share his opinions and struggles.
