The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to hire a high-profile coach with championship experience after another disappointing campaign this season. Despite acquiring LeBron James in free agency, the team is set to miss the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season.

Big changes are expected to come this summer, and it is likely to start in their coaching staff. Luke Walton will likely get a pink slip, and according to Marc Stein of New York Times, the Lakers are looking at the possibility of hiring current Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle.

However, Stein pointed out that it will be hard for the Lakers to pry Carlisle away from Dallas. The veteran head coach reportedly signed an extension for an undisclosed amount that would keep him with the Mavericks until the 2022-2023 season.

The one-time champion coach is also in a desirable situation after the Mavs struck big moves to improve the future of the team. Dallas drafted Slovenian sensation Luka Doncic, who is currently the front-runner for the Rookie of the Year award. Furthermore, they also acquired Kristaps Porzingis in a trade with the New York Knicks.

Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers was also linked to the Lakers, but the one-time champion coach insisted that he is committed to his current team. Former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd is also interested in the Lakers job, but it remains to be seen whether Magic Johnson will go for him this summer.

Stein said that former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue is a strong candidate for the job. Lue led James and the Cavs to a championship in 2016, and the Lakers superstar is likely to approve any plans to hire his former coach. James' presumed approval is said to be Lue's biggest advantage over other candidates.
