The Detroit Lions have worked out free-agent running back Mike Gillislee, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Gillislee played in four games with the New Orleans Saints this past season, carrying the ball 16 times for 43 yards.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the Univeristy of Florida, was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round (164th pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He appeared in just three games with the Dolphins during his rookie campaign, totaling 21 yards off six attempts.

Gillislee then did not play in a single contest in Miami the following season before landing with the Buffalo Bills in 2015, where he carried the ball 47 times for 267 yards and three touchdowns.

He then had a fairly impressive season in 2016, rushing for 577 yards and eight scores while leading the league with a 5.7 yard per carry average. He also hauled in a receiving touchdown.

After spending two years with the Bills, Gillislee made his way to the New England Patriots in 2017, tallying 383 yards while reaching the end zone five times as a rusher, recording 3.7 yards per attempt.

The Lions are in search of running back depth behind Kerryon Johnson, who had a very nice rookie campaign this past season. Detroit had LeGarrette Blount as Johnson's backup in 2018, but the veteran was very disappointing, rushing for just 418 yards and averaging a meager 2.7 yards per carry.

The Lions are coming off of a season in which they went just 6-10, marking their worst finish since winning four games in 2012. Detroit has missed the playoffs in back-to-back years.
