New Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is quite excited with how the team's offensive line is coming together.

Goff spoke with the media on Thursday, telling reporters he was especially excited the Lions used their first-round pick on Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell. He also believes Detroit's offensive line is “shaping up to be one of the top groups in the league,” per Lions reporter Tori Petry.

The Lions didn't exactly surprise tons of people when they took Sewell with the No. 7 pick, though Detroit appeared a strong candidate to take a top wide receiver.

Sewell was widely regarded as the best offensive linemen in the draft. Some considered him the best player in the class, period. In fact, one NFL coach called the former Ducks star a “surefire Hall of Famer.”

Sewell is hardly the only asset up front.

Lions center Frank Ragnow just agreed to a four-year extension that makes him the highest-paid player at that position. Ragnow recorded an 80.3 overall grade in 2020, per Pro Football Focus. The third-year center made his first Pro Bowl.

Time will tell what kind of impact Sewell and Ragnow will have on Goff as the former Los Angeles Rams signal-caller prepares for his first year with the Lions.

Detroit is likely hoping Goff can be its franchise quarterback going forward. He will need protection up front to meet those expectations, especially considering the Lions have a bit of a thin receiving corps after letting Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones walk in free agency.

But Goff appears to have plenty of faith in the hogs up front.
