James Milner may not be the everyday starter he was previously in his tenure with Liverpool, but that doesn't mean the veteran isn't an important part of the identity of Jurgen Klopp's side. Liverpool fans were delighted after hearing the veteran midfielder would be remaining at the club in 2022-23, having accepted a reduced salary in order to continue his career at Anfield. After agreeing to his new deal, Milner took to Twitter to share his excitement about sticking around for another year.
“Couldn't be happier to extend my stay with this incredible club for another year,” Milner said. “Playing football is a privilege and even more so here. Thanks for the support, will do my best to repay it.”
Milner agreed to a one-year contract extension that will see him play on decreased wages for the 2022-23 season. The 36-year-old was eager to extend his stay at the Merseyside and was willing to reduce his salary in order to stick around. Klopp will be delighted to have the seasoned veteran on the squad once again next season as Liverpool aims to dethrone Manchester City in the Premier League while simultaneously getting back to the Champions League Final.
Milner offers Liverpool both leadership and versatility. His ability to line up in various positions on the field will come in handy for the Reds, particularly during a domestic season in which the World Cup will take place. With players experiencing more fatigue as a result of the marquee competition, injuries may be on the rise next season. Having Milner available to cover in the midfield, as a more defensive-minded winger, or even as a full-back will be critical for Liverpool, especially considering the number of key players who will be representing their countries at the World Cup.
The 36-year-old is eager to get started on his eighth season at Liverpool, and fans will be delighted over his decision to return to the club.
