Madden NFL 22 Review Scores on Metacritic: 73 Metascore

There will be a year that EA Sports will break the curse of the Madden NFL 22 franchise. That year, Madden NFL 22 review scores will be high, and user reviews will be positive. Unfortunately, 2021 isn't that year. Madden NFL 22 continues to receive bad review scores from fans. However, it's not all doom and gloom, as some critics gave Madden NFL 22 a good review score. Some of these scores balanced out the negativity and helped give Madden NFL 22 a PS5 aggregate score of 73 and an Xbox Series X aggregate score of 67. Here is what the critics say:

Hardcore Gamer gives Madden NFL 22 a 4.5/5

Hardcore Gamer gives the most forgiving review for Madden NFL 22. Actually, it's not appropriate to call it forgiving at all, as the review gives a lot of praise for EA's latest sports title. Reviewing the PS5 version, Hardcore Gamer states:

“There will still be clickbait videos for Madden bugs out there because that’s a thing that exists. People will still complain about certain minuscule aspects of the game rather than focusing on the fact that new gameplay elements are added and Franchise Mode received meaningful updates. But regardless of all that, the Dynamic Gameplay makes Madden NFL 22 the true next-gen introduction for the series. Gameplay is responsive, fresh and fun, while adding strategy helps shake things up. The Momentum Meter is something cool to work towards and experience the different levels in different stadiums. Franchise Mode and Face of the Franchise Mode are the best that they’ve been in some time by adding new options and ways to play. The gameplay is still far from perfect, and I’d be interested to see how FIFA develops its machine-learning AI and if that would be accessible for Madden in the future. Hits can be brutally nasty using the Hit Stick and seeing different tackles, catches or sack-evading animations will leave you impressed.”

Atomix gives Madden NFL 22 a score of 80/100

Next up is Atomix, who thought that the lack of innovation in the game doesn't take away from Madden NFL 22‘s strong points. Reviewing the PS5 versionAtomix concludes:

Madden NFL 22 is a solid entry in the sports franchise, however, it lacks innovation and doesn't feel like a truly next-gen experience like many would hope it does.”

Worth Playing gives the game a 6.1/10

Among the critics that gave the game a lower rating than the other critics on the PS5 is Worth Playing. The review concludes:

“Even with the new stuff, I can't shake the sense of sameness in the experience of Madden NFL 22. The love of football keeps me playing, but there were no moments that made me think, “OK, we are in the next generation.” That holds the series back while other games have passed it by. It looks like another year where “the leap” will have to wait — if it ever comes at all.”

IGN gives Madden NFL 22 review score of 6/10

Moving over to the Xbox Series X console, where the scores are mostly less enthusiastic, we have IGN‘s, which gave Madden NFL 22 a review score of 6/10.

Madden NFL 22 is a grab bag of decent – if frequently underwhelming – ideas hurt by poor execution. Face of the Franchise, to put it mildly, is a mess. Homefield advantage is a solid addition, but it doesn’t quite capture the true extent of real on-field momentum swings. The new interface is an eyesore, and the new presentation is cast in a strange and unflattering shade of sickly green. It’s smoother and marginally more refined, but in so many ways it’s the same old Madden. In short, if you’re hoping for a massive leap forward for the series on the new generation of consoles (or on the old ones), you’re apt to be disappointed.”

Conclusion

All things considered, Madden NFL 22 is a good game. It will be underwhelming if you've been playing the series every entry as the next-gen upgrades aren't as impressive as you'd expect them to be. However, if this will be your first game in the franchise, then you'll still be floored by the amazing visuals and the years-old content that EA Sports has been refining over the years. If you're a big NFL fan who wants to have a great time this weekend, then this one's for you.
