Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki believes that he failed to do more to keep Steve Nash in Dallas in 2004.

In an interview with BaD Radio, Nowitzki was asked if he regretted not making moves to convince the Mavs to keep Nash. The retired superstar admitted that he is quite guilty about it because he could have done more to force the Mavs to pay the superstar playmaker more to make him stay in Dallas.

“I do regret that a little bit,” Nowitzki said via Sportsday. “We've talked about this now, I'm still pretty close to him. I just saw Nash a few weeks ago in LA, went to dinner. I should have said I don't care what you have to pay him, you have to make this work and at least come close to the money that Phoenix is offering. That is for sure a regret.”

Nash signed with the Phoenix Suns, where he eventually had the best years of his career. The eight-time NBA All-Star won the Most Valuable Player award for two consecutive years in 2005 and 2006. He also led the league in assists for five seasons during his eight-year stay in Phoenix.

Nash eventually ended his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He played two seasons with the Lakers, but failed to make a major impact due to injuries. In 18 seasons in the league, the legendary point guard averaged 14.3 points, 8.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game.
