After the Dallas Mavericks' disappointing playoffs exit, it was made clear that Luka Doncic needs better help for the Mavs to reach the next level. Interestingly, head coach Rick Carlisle has a good idea what they need to just that.

Speaking to reporters on Monday after their Game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, Carlisle opened up about the ideal player that they should look to add next to Doncic. For the Mavs tactician, they need a sharpshooter who can also defend.

“It'd be great to find a rugged defender who was a dead-eye shooter and could make some simple plays. Look, our eyes are always open, and we have some guys that are developing, too,” Carlisle said, per Callie Caplan of the Dallas Morning News.

There are only a few players who fit the description, and of course the first name that comes to mind among the elite 3-and-D players in the league are Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard. While Kawhi could be a free agent this 2021 if he declines his player option, that is more than unlikely to happen considering the state of the Clippers.

Players such as Malcolm Brogdon and Fred VanVleet also comes to mind, but let's get real, what are the odds of their respective teams trading them?

The Mavs have a lot of questions to answer in the offseason, and roster depth is one of them. Aside from figuring how to fit in Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis in the offensive scheme, they also need to strengthen their bench unit in order to truly compete with other powerhouse teams in the Western Conference.
