Los Angeles Lakers icon Magic Johnson couldn't be more excited for Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks after the franchise officially hired Jason Kidd as head coach.

For Johnson, the hiring instantly elevates the Mavs to championship contender for the years to come. He also compared the Kidd-Doncic partnership to the Nate McMillan-Trae Young duo in the Atlanta Hawks, noting that Kidd's presence and basketball mind would be able to help the Slovenian and Dallas to do what McMillan and Young have achieved with the Hawks in the 2021 playoffs.

The Lakers great also praised Mark Cuban's decision to hire former Nike exec Nico Harrison as general manager, highlighting that the move is such a savvy business decision. He then described both hires as a “game changer” that will surely take the Mavs to the next level.

While Jason Kidd has yet to prove himself as a coach in the NBA, there is reason to believe he will have a positive impact on the Mavs, especially on Luka Doncic. As Magic Johnson hinted, Kidd knows how to maximize a playmaker of Doncic's caliber–which should bode well to their championship aspirations.

From the mentality standpoint, Kidd's presence should also be beneficial in helping Doncic mature as a point guard and someone who can fully utilize the players around him.

Of course, there is also the championship pedigree he brings to the table after helping the Mavs win the 2011 championship with Dirk Nowitzki.

There is immense pressure on Kidd in his first season as coach for the Mavs, and his success will be measured right off the bat. Aside from playoff and title contention, Luka's growth under him will be a talking point and a key factor whether his coaching stint can be considered a success or not.
