The Athletic dropped a bombshell Monday morning with a report on Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic's alleged rift with Haralabos Voulgaris, a Mavs executive who has apparently gained an enormous amount of power in the organization since he was hired in 2018. The report states that dysfunction in the front office has led to some internal concerns about the ability to build a championship team around Doncic and how that could impact his long-term future in Dallas.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban took to Twitter to respond to the report, predictably calling BS on it:

While the bluster from Cuban is no surprise, it's worth noting that he did provide quotes to The Athletic about Voulgaris that went into this supposedly “bullshit” story:

When reached for comment on Monday, Cuban defended Voulgaris’ involvement. “I really like what Bob brings to the table. He does a great job of supporting Rick and the front office with unique data insights.”

Cuban added: “Bob has a great grasp of AI and the opportunities it create for gaining an advantage. Which is important to me. But he isn’t any more influential than any other data source on the team.”

Cuban added this on Twitter after his initial response:

Perhaps there are specific parts of the story Cuban finds to be BS, so the question then becomes which parts:

Voulgaris also denied any drama in an interview with Sports Illustrated's Mike Fisher:

“I didn't hear what was said,” Voulgaris tells us. “There's definitely no drama on my end.”

This will be a situation to monitor moving forward. While Doncic has already hinted at signing a five-year supermax extension worth over $200 million, it's clear some things need to be cleaned up in Dallas. The Mavs need to improve the roster around Doncic, and that could be more difficult with in-fighting.

Voulgaris' contract is reportedly up soon, so we'll see if he remains with the franchise or if this story leads to him leaving.
