A gamer named Gunnar Turnquist set a world record for the “smallest modified Nintendo 64 console.

MAKE YOUR OWN HANDHELD NINTENDO 64 CONSOLE

We've seen releases of the SNES and NES Minis, as well as the PlayStation Mini and the Sega Genesis Mini. Their sales figures show that there's a particular segment of the market that wants these kinds of retro-style consoles. Hence, it's not going to be surprising if Nintendo suddenly releases a Nintendo 64 Mini any time soon. However, a console modder living in Massachusetts already beat the company to it.

Gunnar Turnquist has been making modded consoles for years. His latest creation, a handheld Nintendo 64 mini console, got him this award. It can run original Nintendo 64 game cartridges, which are just slightly smaller than the console itself. The modded console measures 3.3-inches by 4.64-inches by 1.77-inches, built like a GameBoy Micro, with its own screen and controls. The LCD screen measures 3.5-inches, and the console itself can run on its batteries for 15 hours before needing a recharge. Compared to the original bulky machine – which had measurements of 2.87-inches by 10.23-inches by 7.48-inches – this one's really a mini. It's about 10% the size of the original.

“I started learning electronics when I was 13 years old,” says Turnquist. “When I saw online that people were building their own portable consoles I thought it was the coolest thing ever and I had to try it.” He then implored others to follow suit, saying that anyone can do this cool hobby of is. “Anyone can learn how to make their own portable console and other DIY electronics projects. It can be a steep learning curve, but you start with something basic and improve each project from there.” We do hope this can inspire modders to do their own projects and bring to life amazing inventions such as this in the future.
