WNBA star Brittney Griner is in the middle of the biggest challenge of her life, as she remains detained in Russia after airport authorities in Moscow allegedly found vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her bags last month.

If convicted, Griner could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, which would clearly derail her successful career. Before her arrest, the Phoenix Mercury star suited for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia to make extra money during the WNBA offseason. Now, things are looking even bleaker.

Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, couldn't help but be extra emotional over the difficult situation, taking to Instagram to pen a heartfelt post.

They have been married for four years now and obviously, Griner and her wife need each other more than ever as they try to navigate this troubling phase.

Griner's situation gets even more complicated amid the dispute between Russia and Ukraine. Some experts even posited that the 31-year-old WNBA All-Star could be even used as a β€œpolitical pawn” or a β€œhigh-profile hostage.”

Over the weekend, Russia released a photo of Griner, marking it the first time she was seen since her arrest, according to Yahoo! Sports, citing a CNN report.

With WNBA players still not getting enough money despite the constant push, many have been moonlighting overseas, particularly in Russia, where the salary is significantly bigger.
