No. 8 Michigan Wolverines have yet to know what it feels like to lose a game this season, but they will now be forced to learn how to handle playing without their starting quarterback. Wilton Speight is gone the way of the dinosaurs. Well, at least for a little bit.
Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Monday that quarterback Wilton Speight will be sidelined for a number of weeks because of an unspecified injury. No timetable for Speight’s recovery was also divulged by the coach, per Wayne Staats of Land of 10.
“He won’t be able to compete this week or for multiple weeks,” Harbaugh said about Speight.
In lieu of Speight, Harbaugh has announced John O’Korn as the interim starter for the 5-0 Wolverines team that beat the Purdue Boilermakers at home on September 23, 28-10. This will likely end up being a tough stretch of outings for Harbaugh and company. Few teams in the nation can trot about a brutal Big Ten schedule without a hiccup.
Speight was taken out in the first quarter of that game after getting sacked by Markus Bailey and then receiving a subsequent hit from Eddy Wilson. O’Korn replaced Speight immediately and threw for 270 passing yards and a touchdown with an interception on 18-of-26 pass attempts. Those are promising numbers.
O’Korn played two seasons for the Houston Cougars before transferring to Michigan in 2015, and he’ll be tested in a big-time matchup in Ann Arbor against the Michigan State Spartans this Saturday.
On the season, Speight has 581 passing yards and three touchdown passes against two interceptions.
