This current Major League Baseball free agency period has been full of excitement. Several big names have changed teams and several more big names remain on the market. From Max Scherzer going to the New York Mets to the Texas Rangers making two huge splashes, this offseason has been a fun ride.

The caveat, though, is that all this player movement is the result of the pending expiration of the league's collective bargaining agreement. Many players were looking to secure their new contract before Wednesday night, which is when the CBA expires and a lockout likely follows.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the league and its players association haven't gotten anywhere on negotiations for a new CBA, making a lockout inevitable.

There hasn't been much hope of a deal being agreed to before the expiraiton date of the current CBA. Just 24 hours before the date, it seems like MLB will indeed have a lockout, its first work stoppage since the 1994 players' strike. Negotiations lasting for months, namely if they last until spring training usually arrives, could have seious reprocussions for the 2022 season.

Several star players have moved teams so far in addition to the aforementioned Scherzer and the Rangers' signings, Marcus Semien and Corey Seager. Other stars like Clayton Kershaw, Kris Bryant, Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman remain available.
