The Home Run Derby is typically one of the most exciting moments of MLB All-Star Game festivities and now, the league is bringing the fans one step closer to watching big leaguers, or ex-big leaguers in this matter, go deep.

Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday they will be launching the Home Run Derby X tournament, in which former MLB stars Adrian Gonzalez, Geovany Soto, Nick Swisher, and Johnny Gomes headline the event that will take place on a “reduced version of a baseball field”.

The tournament is set to travel worldwide, with stops in London, Seoul, and Mexico City this year. The four organizations competing are the oldest in the MLB: The Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Yankees.

the MLB released this statement via press release on the new event. Per CBS Sports:

“Inspired by the success and simplicity of the Home Run Derby the day before the MLB All-Star Game, Home Run Derby X has been developed with the goal of attracting a new audience to baseball; creating high-energy live event experiences and opportunities for digital storytelling.”

Essentially, this is how it works. There will be points available both offensively and defensively, with each batter receiving an at-bat of 25 pitches. Two opponents will be in the outfield and get a point for a catch. Each home run is also worth a point, along with other ways to score including batters hitting consecutive homers and hitting targets.

The MLB has dreamed up quite the event. Let's hope the fans like it.
