The Cardinals blew the lead in the top of the ninth, giving up six runs and the game. This is a huge series for St. Louis, so they can’t afford another loss. Chicago has already proven themselves to be sellers at this year’s trade deadline, so the only thing they have on their minds is playing spoiler. Wednesday night’s game should be another exciting one.

Why The Cubs Could Cover The Spread
Chicago has had a rough go of it in the batter’s box recently, so their pitching is what propels them to wins. That trend is likely to continue in this matchup with Kyle Hendricks taking the mound.
Hendricks has been the Cubs’ best pitcher this season. He owns a 3.65 ERA on the season to go with a 1.26 WHIP. Both are solid numbers, but they have improved dramatically in Hendricks’ last seven starts. In that span, his ERA drops to 2.13 with his WHIP falling all the way to 1.02. Hendricks has also already faced the Cardinals three times this season, posting six innings pitched and two earned runs given up in both of his last two starts against St. Louis. The Chicago ace has been pitching well and has the Cardinals figured out. There’s no reason to think that either of those will change on Wednesday.
The Cardinals also struggle against right-handed pitching. Their team batting average, OBP, and OPS all fall when facing righties as opposed to lefties.
Why The Cardinals Could Cover The Spread
The Cardinals have the same issues as the Cubs. Their lineup has struggled for much of the year, so when they win it’s typically because of their pitching. The Cardinals will start Adam Wainwright Wednesday, so they may not need all that much offense to win this one.
Wainwright has pitched well throughout this season, but his last seven starts have been fantastic. The righty owns a 3.00 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in that span, both great numbers. He’s also been significantly better when playing at home, where his ERA drops to 2.84 with his WHIP also plummeting to .97. All indicators point to Wainwright putting together a nice outing in this one.
The Cubs, like the Cardinals, struggle against right-handed pitching. Chicago’s batting average against lefties is a solid .250, but that falls all the way to .218 against righties. Chicago’s OBP, OPS, and slugging percentage all follow suit.

With both teams struggling to swing the bat well, the under looks great. Both squads are also sending out their aces, so this matchup should remain very low-scoring. The odds also make the Cubs a good pick, as this game is essentially a coin flip.
