The Seattle Mariners have taken control of the AL West! A large power vacuum formed in the division with the collapse of the Houston Astros and the defending champions Texas Rangers. With both teams struggling, Seattle has stormed into the playoff picture. Their record isn't exactly stellar (36-30, compared to the other division leaders' 40+ win season right now), but it's more than enough to lead the division.

However, winning the division is only half the battle. Seattle wants to make sure that they will also succeed once the playoffs arrive. With that in mind, a potential trade target from the other league has emerged. Bob Nightengale reports that the Mariners are ready to go all-in, and one move they're looking to make is trading for New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso.

“This is the year, rival executives say, that the Seattle Mariners make their boldest move at the trade deadline and acquire offensive help knowing they have a legitimate chance for the World Series with their start-studded starting rotation… Mets first baseman Pete Alonso may be the perfect fit.”

It's worth noting that back in 2021, the Mariners swung for a trade with the Cincinnati Reds to acquire Luis Castillo. Castillo would proceed to help lead the Mariners to not only their first playoff appearance in 20 years, but also their first series win. The star pitcher is now the foundation of a Seattle rotation that boasts the likes of George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, and the emerging Bryce Miller.

Alonso's potential fit with Mariners

The Mariners are in dire need of power in their lineup. They are well below the league average in slugging at just .366 as a team. Julio Rodriguez has not been generating as much power as he did in his rookie season. Cal Raleigh is the best power hitter (11 home runs), but he has an unsightly .201 batting average.

Pete Alonso would theoretically overlap with another key piece for the Mariners in Ty France. Both play first base, are sub-par defenders at best, and hit bombs. In terms of hitting, though, Alonso is a much, much better player than France. It shouldn't be a problem, though: both Alonso and France could alternate as the DH to replace Mitch Garver when needed.

Alonso's trade status has been in question ever since the Mets' collapse a few seasons ago. The team was seemingly unwilling to trade the star first baseman, even as everything collapsed around him. Now, though, the tune seems to have shifted. The Mariners might have to give up a massive haul for Alonso, but if they pull the trigger… it will certainly be worth it.

The Mariners have had a small taste of the playoffs last season, and even drank the sweet nectar of victory. Once you've had your fill, you're left wanting more. This is a chance for Seattle to seize the division for themselves AND make a deep run in the postseason. It's not going to be easy: the AL East looms as a challenge ahead. However, they need to focus on what's in front of them and get better in the meantime.
