Like the rest of the league, the Arizona Diamondbacks are finding their groove in 2022 MLB Spring Training. While preparing for the upcoming season, the Diamondbacks are also focused on keeping franchise star Ketel Marte for the long haul.
The center fielder is going to be a free agent following the 2022 season unless the team exercises his two club options. However, Marte and Arizona are currently in discussion to extend his current contract.
MLB insider Robert Murray tweeted the news Saturday afternoon.
Ketel Marte and the Arizona Diamondbacks have had recent talks about a contract extension, according to sources familiar with the situation. Marte, 28, has one year and two club options left on his current contract and Arizona is trying to keep him long-term.

Marte is in the final year of his five-year, $24 million deal with the Diamondbacks. The contract includes $24 million guaranteed and an annual average salary of $4.8 million, per Spotrac.
Extending Marte's contract would be great for Arizona. The 28-year-old has been outstanding for the Diamondbacks and still has plenty of years in the league left to play. Last season, Marte averaged .318 batting, .909 on-base, and .532 slugging. He had 108 hits, including 29 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs, and 50 RBIs.
In Spring Training, the Diamondbacks have gone 3-5-1. Marte has played in three of the preseason games with 11 at-bats and two hits for a .182 batting average.
The Seattle Mariners signed Marte as an international free agent in 2010. He made his MLB debut with the team in 2015, and was eventually traded to Arizona in 2016, where he has made his mark on the league.
