The rebuilding phase for the Oakland Athletics took another step on Sunday, as they elected to trade Sean Manaea and Aaron Holiday to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Euribiel Angeles and Adrian Martinez.
Manaea was linked to multiple teams over the past month for a trade. Among them, the Chicago White Sox showed an interest in acquiring Manaea, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
While the reigning AL Central champions aimed to once again strengthen their starting rotation, Rosenthal notes that the Padres “had more to offer” for the sixth-year pitcher.
More so, the Athletics are “high” on Angeles. They see much promise in the “offensive potential” of the versatile infielder. He is coming off of a season in the minor leagues where he featured in both Single-A and High-A, as he posted a .330 batting average to go along with 64 RBI recorded in 105 total games played.
Angeles and Martinez were not top 10 ranked prospects in the Padres’ minor league system, according to MLB.com. It now ranks Angeles and Martinez at 10th and 25th respectively in the Athletics' minor league system.
For now, the White Sox will call upon Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito and Dylan Cease to lead their starting pitching staff. On the other hand, the Padres now bolster one of the more deep starting rotation units in MLB today.
