First baseman Jose Abreu has agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract extension with the Chicago White Sox, according to the team.
Abreu was set to hit free agency this offseason, but he elected to accept the White Sox's qualifying offer, which allowed him and the club to work out a long-term deal.
The 32-year-old is coming off a strong 2019 campaign in which he slashed .284/.330/.503 with 33 home runs, 38 doubles and an AL-best 123 RBI over 693 plate appearances, en route to his second straight All-Star selection.
Abreu initially signed with Chicago as an amateur free agent back in 2013.
He made his big-league debut in 2014 and was impressive, slashing .317/.383/.581 with 36 long balls, 35 doubles and 107 RBI across 622 trips to the plate.
The Cuban then posted terrific numbers once again in 2015, registering a slash line of .290/.347/.502 with 30 dingers, 34 doubles and 101 RBI through 668 plate appearances.
While Abreu took a slight step back in terms of power numbers in 2016, he remained solid, slashing .293/.353/.468 with 25 homers and 100 RBI. In 2017, he bounced back by slashing .304/.354/.552 with 33 home runs, 43 doubles and 102 RBI.
Oddly enough, Abreu did not make his first All-Star team until 2018 when he had his least productive season as a pro, as he slashed .265/.325/.473 with 22 long balls, 36 doubles and 78 RBI over 553 plate appearances that season.
Aside from 2018, Abreu has consistently been one of the best power hitters in the American League.
The White Sox as a team, on the other hand, have not enjoyed the same type of success, as they have not made the playoffs since 2008 and have not posted a winning season since 2012. However, the club appears to be on the upswing, and this Abreu deal comes a day after inking Yasmani Grandal to a four-year, $73 million contract.
