MLB Network broadcaster Jim Kaat apologized on air during Game 2 of the White Sox and Astros series on Friday after he made an insensitive comment where he referred to slavery.
We have a problem. On the @MLBNetwork telecast of the White Sox/Astros Game 2, Jim Kaat, who has never said anything like this on air (or to my knowledge, off) in his life, just wished for a “40 acre field full of” Yoan Moncadas. Video: @VaguelyFunnyDan https://t.co/dYOFp8pJ65

Kaat, who used to pitch in the MLB, was discussing with Buck Showalter the athleticism and potential of White Sox infielder Yoan Moncada. Showalter then claimed he told the Orioles front office to get more players like Moncada. Kaat responded with “Get a 40-acre field full of em”, which is a reference to slavery in America. The 82-year-old issued his apology in the fourth inning.

Unfortunately, this type of thing has already happened a couple of times this season in the MLB. Diamondbacks broadcaster Bob Brenly also made insensitive racial comments. He ultimately took a leave of absence after the backlash. Tigers announcer Jack Morris was in hot water for a similar situation and was hit with a 23-day suspension.
As for the game, Houston and Chicago were in a 4-4 deadlock in the sixth inning before the Astros broke it wide open with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. They now have a 2-0 lead in the ALDS. Hopefully, Jim Kaat learns from his mistake and doesn't make comments like this again in future MLB games.
