The New York Yankees have been flexing their muscle at the plate and on the mound this season, but that doesn't mean they can't get tripped up. The Cincinnati Reds gave Clay Holmes and the Bronx Bombers a reality check when they handed the Yankees a 4-3 loss Tuesday night in the opener of their three-game set in the Big Apple.

The Yankees actually had the game in the bag until Clay Holmes failed to get the job done in the ninth, where he allowed four earned runs on four hits to give Cincinnati the lead for good.

Holmes, the usually reliable reliever for the Yankees almost sounded apologetic after the game while promising that he would be better when it comes to making the right adjustments going forward.

Via ESPN:

“It can’t happen,” Holmes said. “I have to be a little better at making some in-game adjustments.”

There's no reason at all to lose any faith in Clay Holmes, especially since he has always been so dependable out of the bullpen. Holmes still owns a low 1.37 ERA to go with a 1.99 FIP and a .248 BABIP.

“I think this is just an outlier,” manager Aaron Boone said of Holmes, whose ERA climbed from 0.46 to 1.37. “We certainly pay attention to it, but I don't think it was anything more than him being of whack tonight.”

Then again, this could also be a sign that regression is coming for Clay Holmes, considering how incredibly good he has been overall so far in the 2022 MLB season.
