New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter is getting his own version of the “Last Dance” with an upcoming docuseries entitled “The Captain.”

The project, expected to premier on ESPN and ESPN+ in 2022, is executive produced by Spike Lee, among others. It will chronicle Jeter's upbringing and ascent to being the face of one of sports' most storied franchises, per ESPN PR:

Emmy-winning director Randy Wilkins (“86-32,” “Docket 32357,” “Dear…”) will tell the story of Jeter’s professional and personal triumphs and challenges. The documentary series will use Jeter’s journey as a vessel to tell a larger cultural story that explores race, family, community, rivalries and more. The heartbeat of the project is candid access to the man who helped restore shine to a team, a city, and a culture.

Jeter became a seminal figure in Yankees history over the course of a 20-year career.

The star shortstop finished his career with 14 All-Star nods, five Silver Slugger Awards, five Gold Glove Awards and five World Series titles to go with a World Series MVP. Jeter is the Yankees' all-time hit leader, finishing his career with 3,465 hits and a .310 batting average.

In some ways, Jeter's baseball career is still in its early stages. He currently presides as CEO of the Miami Marlins, a team rapidly advancing in its rebuilding process. First and foremost, however, Jeter is a Yankee.

It should be interesting to see how director Randy Wilkins takes on this docuseries and just how much of the story comes directly from Jeter. Regardless, “The Captain” is the latest athlete to get docuseries treatment.
