Just a day after Jameson Taillon took a perfect game into the eighth inning for the New York Yankees, Gerrit Cole did a lot of the same on Friday night in a 13-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. The hard-throwing righty flirted with history as well, throwing a perfect 6.2 innings before Jonathan Schoop laced a single in the seventh.
After the fantastic outing where the Yankees star surrendered just two hits across seven frames, Cole couldn't help but thank the fans for their support throughout the night.
“It was pretty exciting,” Cole said. “The fans were in it. I heard them chanting my name, which was pretty magical. It just means so much to us when we have them behind us. It can be such a force and almost will us to do better.”
Yankees fans have all the reason to be behind their team right now. They're 37-15 which is the best record in baseball. Plus, it was just back-to-back nights of pure brilliance on the hill.
Cole was honestly unhittable on Friday. He allowed zero runs as well, struck out nine, and walked none. That's now two starts in a row of dominance from the Yankees ace, which is a very positive sign as he lowered his 2022 ERA to a stellar 2.78.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, New York is also the first team since 1961 to have perfect game bids of six or more innings in consecutive games. The Yanks keep on rolling and the Bronx Bombers faithful is loving it.
