New York Yankees fans have been waiting patiently through injury and injury for the former ace Luis Severino to return to form – on Thursday night against the Blue Jays, the ‘Bleacher Creatures' in the Bronx saw a flash of the return of their superstar pitcher.
The two-time All-Star pitched five innings, gave up no runs on two hits, and two walks, and struck out six batters on 83 pitches.

Since making back-to-back MLB All-Star appearances in 2017 and 2018, the injury bug has chomped down on Luis Severino.
Severino made just three starts in 2019 while dealing with shoulder inflammation, missed all of 2020 after receiving Tommy John Surgery on his torn ulnar collateral ligament in Feb. 2020, and made just four total starts in 2021 after a combination of rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery and an injury to his groin during his rehab assignment in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
“Health-wise, I feel pretty solid,” Severino said to reporters back in March during spring training. “My arm was feeling good. Results were not that good, but the good thing is I’m feeling healthy.”
For years, the Yankees have looked far and wide to try and find answers for more frontline starters to add to their always intimidating bullpen. Part of the appeal of bringing in Gerrit Cole in 2020 was to pair Cole with Severino atop the Yankees rotation, giving the Yankees as formidable a 1-2 punch in their rotation as any team in baseball. With Severino oft-injured the last several years, Brian Cashman's plan has been unable to hit the ground running.
If Severino can continue to maintain the level that he showed tonight against the Blue Jays, the Yankees rotation which looked shaky at best on paper can be a real weapon for them come October.
