The New York Yankees are going to have a new-look pitching staff in 2021 and one of their relievers is already set to hit the injured list. After experiencing some discomfort in his elbow earlier this week, Zack Britton is going to undergo surgery to remove a bone chip in his left elbow, per the team's official Twitter account.

On Sunday, Britton reportedly began feeling soreness in his left elbow after a bullpen session for the Yankees. Aaron Boone would then have Britton avoid pitching until he underwent an MRI on Monday, which revealed a bone chip in his left elbow.

Seeing that the ailment is in Britton's throwing elbow, there are concerns surrounding his timetable to return. With the 2021 season set to begin early next month, Britton is likely to miss the start of the season for the Yankees.

Britton, who is entering his third full season in New York, is coming off of a stellar showing in the 2020 season. The veteran reliever would produce an impressive 1.89 ERA, along with 16 strikeouts in 20 outings. He would also give up zero home runs to opposing batters for the first time in his career.

Throughout the offseason, New York added Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon in hopes to improve their rotation around Gerrit Cole. As for the bullpen, the Yankees are entering the 2021 season with Aroldis Chapman, Britton, Chad Green, Darren O'Day, and Justin Wilson as their proven arms. But to begin the season, it looks as if New York will have to be without Britton due to an injury to his throwing elbow.
