Manny Machado is slugging as good as anyone else so far this season. The San Diego Padres superstar is posting an OPS of 1.056 with an OBP of .451, which both lead the National League. His 46 hits lead all of MLB.

There's more to Machado than what he does at the plate and in the hot corner. Padres manager Bob Melvin told Scott Miller of the New York Times that Machado is a fantastic leader. He touts several qualities, such as his leading by example and being vocal with his teammates.

“You see him from afar and you have your opinions about him,” Manager Bob Melvin, who joined the Padres this off-season, said of Machado, who has moved past some early-career issues and into a leadership role. “And then you get here and see what he’s all about. He is somewhat vocal, definitely leads by example. He shows up to play every single day. He performs every single day. There are subtle things about him that scream leadership.”

Machado has massively helped the Padres overcome the absence of Fernando Tatis Jr., who is still out with a wrist injury. Although Machado can be abrasive at times, it's clear that San Diego values him a lot. So far, the team is 21-12 without their MVP candidate from last year.

Although Machado may not get all the attention that a superstar of his caliber deserves, the Padres know that he is among the very best in baseball.
