The San Diego Padres have massive expectations to live up to. They have lots of talent and are expected to be playoff-caliber. An ugly late-season skid left them with a losing record last season.
In addition to heavily pursuing Nelson Cruz, the Padres are looking to shake up their existing roster. According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, they are shopping first baseman Eric Hosmer and outfielder Wil Myers. Both one-time All-Stars have been in San Diego for years but make sense as trade candidates.
Per sources, the Padres are "aggressively shopping" both Eric Hosmer & Wil Myers.
Hosmer:
* 4 years/$60M left on deal
* Limited no-trade (can block deals to 10 teams)
* can opt out after '22
* 10-5 rights after '22Myers:
* owed $20M in '22
* $20M '23 club option ($1M buyout)— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) March 13, 2022
The 32-year-old Hosmer may be very hard to move. His contract is long, he has a no-trade clause (for just 10 teams) and has not been playing his best ball as of late. He posted a slugging percentage of just .395 in 151 games last season, which is very bad for a position that is supposed to contribute a lot of power. The one thing going in his favor is his reputation of being a good defender.
Myers should be easier to move for the Padres, though. His contract situation is much less murky and his production has been better. The 31-year-old posted a triple slash of .256/.334/.434 last season in 146 games.
With a star-studded infield of Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth, San Diego has to round out the rest of the roster to make a playoff push. With the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants in their way, their postseason path is extremely crowded.
