The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants have had some insane matchups over the years. The two rival teams have been at the heart of some of the best games the MLB has ever seen. Amidst this rivalry, two players stood out as the foundations of their respective teams: Dodgers ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw and Giants catcher Buster Posey.
Despite the heated Dodgers-Giants rivalry, both players clearly have respect for each other. With Posey announcing his retirement earlier today, Kershaw made sure to pay his respects to the legendary catcher (via Yahoo Sports).
“I just have all the respect in the world for him. I think that's the best way to say it. When you play against a guy for a long time and you're part of the rivalry that is the Giants and Dodgers… there's some built-in animosity towards the other team. We've had our tiffs in the past…but I've always admired Buster from afar, I've always thought he carried himself on the field really, really well.”
The Dodgers pitcher then went on to heap more praise towards Posey, saying he wants his kids to be like the Giants catcher.
“And now that I've got some boys, I always think about guys I would want them to emulate their game after. Not just how they play, obviously, because Buster was really good at that, but just how they go about the game, how they play, how they interact with their teammates and different things like that, Buster is at the top of the list for me.”
Posey during his time with the Giants was undeniably one of the leaders of the team, both on and off the field. His leadership and batting prowess (.302 career average batting percentage, .372 OBP) made him an absolute thorn for the opposing teams, especially the Dodgers. His presence on the field will be sorely missed, not just by Giants fans but even Dodgers fans and players. Best of luck to Posey in his post-retirement life!
