Before Cody Bellinger broke the game wide open on Friday night with a grand slam, the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers were deadlocked in a 1-1 contest. With two outs and two runners on in the top of the eighth, veteran Brandon Belt was set to step up to the plate. After all, he's one of the most clutch hitters in franchise history and has come up with big hits time and time again.

But, Gabe Kapler instead decided to bring in David Villar to pinch hit for Belt, a rookie who was only playing in his 14th big league game. Although Belt will always respect his manager's decision, the veteran firmly believed he'd come through in that situation.

Via The Athletic:

“I think I would have gotten the job done,” Brandon Belt said. “I felt good all night. But again, I get it. (Kapler) has got a formula that works for us. It worked for us last year. But I’m always going to want to stay in — always. That’s not going to change. The good thing is I’ll get plenty of chances to show what I can do and I’ll come through. I always have and I always will. I’m going to figure it out and hang in there. And at the end of the season, I (won’t be) too worried about it.”

“I feel I’m the guy right there but he didn’t think so. Bottom line, I’m sitting there and I’m going to support my teammates.”

Villar ended up grounding out while Brandon Belt sat there wondering what could've been. Remember, this is the same guy who smacked several clutch hits in the World Series during the Giants' dynasty years. He's built for the pressure.
