The St. Louis Cardinals have had a roller-coaster of a season. After going 18-7 in April, the Redbirds stumbled to a 9-18 record in May. Despite playing mostly .500 baseball since then, the Cardinals find themselves in the thick of the Wild Card race because of some very underwhelming performances from teams like the Phillies, Brewers, and Rockies.
Cardinals president John Mozeliak has always been one of the more prudent executives in baseball, and he appears to be weighing a lot of different options in the lead up to the trade deadline. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals may be open to trading pitchers Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha as well as outfielder Tyler O'Neill.
Martinez looked like a potential ace in St. Louis after a trio of excellent seasons form 2015-17, but the injury bug has struck in recent years, and Martinez has exclusively pitched out of the bullpen in 2019. Wacha has also succumbed to the injury bug and he was demoted to the bullpen after getting off to a very slow start.

Martinez seems like an unlikely trade piece after the Cardinals signed him to an extension in 2017, and O'Neill still figures to be a big part of the future in St. Louis. On the other hand, Wacha will be a free agent this year, and it is likely that Mozeliak would want to capitalize on any value he may have before he hits the open market.
