Finally making his return from the injury list, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer is back for the Nats on Thursday night, where he has been retroactively since July 26th. The end of July marked the end of a really, really good start to the season for Scherzer, who was well on his way to be in the running for his fourth Cy Young award.
While injuries do not necessarily take him out of the award race, other arms have more games under their belts, and especially for someone like award front runner Hyun-Jin Ryu of the Los Angeles Dodgers, his continued dominance over the course of the entire season has made it tough for any pitcher, not just Scherzer, to make up any ground in the award race.
Back issues have plagued Scherzer so far this season, as he has specifically been dealing with a ‘mild rhomboid strain,’ but manager Dave Martinez and the entire medical staff were able to let him start Thursday night against the Pirates.
Not necessarily on any specific pitch count, according to Jake Crouse of MLB.com, the team will be watching him closely as he makes his return to the bump.
So far in 2019, Scherzer has pitched very well, earning a 2.41 ERA with nine wins and five losses across 134.1 innings. Only having allowed 36 earned runs so far is quite impressive too, and his return to the starting rotation will for sure help the Nationals as they gear up for a postseason push.
Currently sitting six games back in the National League East division behind the red-hot Atlanta Braves, the best chance for the Nationals looks to be the Wild Card, where they currently lead all teams in the hunt for a wild card berth.
