The Sacramento Kings and the Dallas Mavericks have the 2nd and 5th pick respectively in the upcoming NBA Draft. However, sources say that they are trying to trade down.
As reported by Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer, such intentions were influenced by the Golden State Warriors' dominance in the NBA Finals:
The offseason hot stove is already burning up just three days after the Warriors’ win. The Kings and Mavericks are open to moving down in the draft, according to multiple league front-office executives. Sacramento is in the asset-stacking business, while Dallas is trying to compete for the playoffs next season.
Conversely, the L.A. Clippers, who have the 12th and 13th pick, are looking to move up as they are interested in picking Luka Donic and Michae l Porter Jr.
The Clippers, who have the no. 12 and no. 13 picks, are one team pushing to move up, as I previously reported, and have interest in both Luka Doncic and Michael Porter Jr.
Apparently, having the top picks in the draft is not enough. Teams are willing to milk and devise other strategies to build their team.
Perhaps the two teams have learned from the past. Stacking your team with a ton of superstars won't necessarily rack up wins. Assembling a contender team is like forming a puzzle. Before everything else, the pieces have to fit seamlessly.
