Adam Silver is not a big of the load management trend. If it isn't clear by now, he made it a point to emphasize that during his recent speech in the NBA 2K23 Summer League.

The NBA Commissioner has one particular problem about load management: it's bad for business. Fans are buying tickets and paying big bucks to see the game's biggest stars, but imagine their disappointment if they end up not seeing those superstars because their coach or the team decides to give them the day off to rest.

Silver gets it, the season is long and can be daunting. Rest is necessary to make sure players are healthy come the playoffs. However, that is also why the league has been trying to tweak the schedule to help everyone. Unfortunately, load management persists.

In his speech, Silver also hilariously called out San Antonio Spurs exec RC Buford for starting the trend. After all, the team used to label it's aging stars like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili with the “DNP-Rest” status, which is basically load management.

“There’s nothing more frustrating also for our fans than having players, frankly, who aren’t injured following some program schedule for rest. I’m looking at [Spurs executive] R.C. [Buford], you started this all,” Silver said, per Ben Golliver of Washington Post.

It's easy to see where Adam Silver is coming from, but it's definitely hard to address the issue since teams will always do what's best for the franchise in the long run. The goal is to win a championship, and if it means resting your best players even in big matchups, then teams will do it.

There have been actions such as lessening back-t0-backs and ideas like shortening the regular season of the NBA, but it remains to be seen if it will actually stop load management.
