Since Carmelo Anthony is still left without a team four months after free agency opened, fans have been calling for him to suit up for Team USA in the upcoming FIBA World Cup, which will be held in China from August 31-September 15. Some big-name players like Anthony Davis, James Harden, and Damian Lillard decided to withdraw their commitment to the national team, and fans saw it as an opportunity for Melo to redeem himself.

Well, Melo's camp and Team USA have actually discussed that possibility of letting Anthony play in the World Cup, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, but for some unknown reason, both sides decided not to push through with it.

Anthony’s inner circle had conversations with USA Basketball officials about the possibility of him returning to the program to play this summer, sources told The Athletic. There was a sense Anthony, 35, could benefit from Team USA, and vice versa. Both sides ultimately decided not to go in the direction of Anthony suiting up once more for the U.S., sources said, with Team USA thanking him for his play over the years.

Melo has been a huge part of Team USA's success in international tournaments over the past decade. He helped them win three straight Olympic gold medals, and he has been recognized as USA Basketball Athlete of the Year twice. If we're talking about resume, there's no doubt that Anthony can still help the national team dominate in the World Cup.

Yet even that opportunity has not been given to him. It is possible that not only is his NBA career over, but also his career as a member of the Team USA.
