The month of July is almost gone and perennial All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony is still without a job — a sad, but true reality for what his NBA life has become as he ages into potential retirement. His longtime trainer Chris Brickley went on Power 105’s The Breakfast Club a few days ago, giving DJ Envy and Angela Yee a ringing endorsement, saying he's much better than most players currently in the league.
Via Brandon Robinson of Heavy.com:
“He’s easily better than 60 percent, 70 percent of the NBA players walking around,” said Brickley. “It’s just that teams are afraid of ‘I want to be a starter.’ It’s not the case. Melo just wants to have a farewell season, do what D-Wade did. Have a jersey swap. He had a great career, he’s a Hall of Famer. So hopefully that could happen.”
This is the first time that the words “farewell season” and “Carmelo Anthony” have been associated together, as those have yet to come out together in a sentence by the once-gifted scorer.
Anthony saw a quick end to his 2018-19 season with the Houston Rockets after 10 games, spending the remainder of the campaign in NBA limbo until he was traded and eventually waived by the Chicago Bulls to effectively end his season.
Melo has still been cashing the checks, but it's obvious he's still putting in the work with faith on a potential NBA return. Not many roster spots are left, but if he's really willing to take a bench role for his final NBA season, it might just open up the possibility of a potential return to the NBA hardwood.
