Luka Doncic was one of the foremost sophomore sensations in NBA history during the 2019-20 season. But the new season has not been very kind to Luka thus far. Golden State Warriors guard Kelly Oubre Jr. has drawn plenty of scrutiny for starting the season just 1-for-21 from beyond the arc. However, Doncic's perimeter struggles are also tremendous.

The Dallas Mavericks star is just 2-for-21 from deep to start the NBA season, joining Oubre as one of the two worst 3-point percentages (min. 20 attempts) through four games in NBA history, per ESPN's Tim MacMahon.

Doncic's slow start has informed Dallas' 1-3 mark to open the year. The Mavs are also still without Kristaps Porzingis, but simply have not gotten enough from their NBA star.

Luka is averaging 23.8 points, 6.3 assists and 5.8 rebounds through the first four games of the NBA season. Respectable numbers, to be sure, but a fairly steep decline from last year's numbers. Plus, that line looks less impressive when accounting for Doncic's 36 percent usage rate to start the year.

Being more efficient from the arc was seemingly the next step in Doncic's individual evolution. The Slovenian took nearly nine three-pointers per game last NBA season, but converted on under 32 percent of those attempts.

Luka Doncic can create space with ease. He deploys a smooth step-back jumper to get open looks, which is a made possible because of his ability to leverage his frame in getting to the basket. However, opponents are eventually going to force Luka to shoot from deep. His ability to get back on track from the arc should fully unlock the Mavs' offense and help them become a force in the NBA.
