The NBA has lost a former player in a tragic accident.

Rasual Butler, who played 13 years in the NBA for a host of franchises, died early Wednesday morning in a car crash. His wife was also killed in the crash, per TMZ Sports.

Ex-NBA player Rasual Butler and his wife — a singer who appeared on “American Idol” — were both killed in a single car crash in Studio City, CA early Wednesday morning, TMZ Sports has learned.

38-year-old Butler — who was drafted by the Miami Heat in 2002 — lost control of his Range Rover around 2 AM, struck a parking meter and slammed into a wall. The car flipped. Officers believe the car was speeding before it lost control.

A pair of NBA reporters expressed their sorrow and condolences for Butler, who played for the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors, among other teams. Reporters for both teams took to Twitter with their messages.

This is truly tragic news. It's always awful to hear about people dying, especially in what seems like a horrific car crash.

The NBA lost a journeyman in Butler, who played for seven teams throughout his long career. He most recently was playing in the BIG3 league.

Butler played a total of 809 games in the NBA. He averaged 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds for this career. His best season was in 2009-10 with the L.A. Clippers, where he averaged almost 12 points a game.

As news of this tragedy makes its way through the rest of the NBA, there will surely be more players and coaches reacting to Butler's death. It's truly a sad day for the league.
