Earlier on Tuesday, Kris Humphries shared that he would be retiring from the game of basketball in a letter published to The Players’ Tribune. In it, he tells the story of his life and how he got into the game of basketball, but also dives into his much publicized and brief marriage to Kim Kardashian.

In the letter, Humphries describes getting traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Brooklyn Nets, and how once there, he realized what type of NBA player he could become. From there, he mentions meeting a girl who was:

“really famous” and getting married. And then I met a girl who happened to be really famous, and I got married, and.…. Damn.

Look, I should have known what I was getting into. I was definitely naive about how much my life was going to change. But the one thing that really bothers me is whenever people say that my marriage was fake.

As most of us know, the Humphries and Kardashian relationship didn’t last too long, with their marriage only lasting just 72 days before the two had filed for divorce. While many think the relationship was some sort of publicity stunt for the Kardashian family and Humphries, though, Kris is very adamant that it was never anything fake.

“There’s definitely a lot about that world that is not entirely real. But our actual relationship was 100% real. When it was clear that it wasn’t working … what can I say?” he said. “It sucked. It’s never easy to go through the embarrassment of something like that — with your friends, with your family…. But when it plays out so publicly, in front of the world, it’s a whole other level. It was brutal.”

After their divorce, Humphries became somewhat of a joke to much of the NBA community, so much so that he began getting booed in nearly every game he checked into. According to him, it led to some anxiety issues, including Humphries not wanting to leave his home at some points. However, things eventually smoothed out for Humphries, and he was able to have long NBA career, spanning 13 years before calling it quits today.
