Lamar Odom regrets not listening to Jay-Z’s advice of starting record label

Former NBA player Lamar Odom regrets not listening to Jay-Z’s advice of starting a record label.

Odom made the revelation to “People’s Party with Talib Kweli” (via Dime’s official Twitter account) on June 16.

Odom remembered the time when he had a conversation with Jay-Z. This was shortly after Odom launched his Rich Soil Entertainment record label. Jay-Z tried to discourage him from staring a career in the music industry, per UPROXX’s Ryan Nagelhout.

He was like, ‘Yo, what’s up with you and this rap s–t? Jay-Z asked. Odom explained that he had a rapper he ‘believed in’ and wanted to make a star, but Jay-Z warned that he should be more like Magic Johnson and invest in something other than music.

He was like, ‘Nah, homie, you should be doing what Magic is doing. Doing real estate or something.’ Odom recalled. Johnson has made a number of investments in real estate and other endeavors, which has helped keep him busy and also make a lot of money. But Odom said despite the advice, he wasn’t sure whether he could trust Jay at the time.

‘And so I think I took it the wrong way,’ Odom said with a laugh. ‘Like, these motherf—–s must be scared of me.’

Odom’s Rich Soil Entertainment is still around. However, Nagelhout says it hasn’t had “any true releases” yet. Odom also has a clothing label (also known as “Rich Soil”).

“I didn’t listen to big homie, but I wish I would,” Odom told UPROXX. “Sometimes I think, what if I’d have listened to HOD’s advice.”

On this note, it’s never too late for Lamar Odom and anybody, for that matter. Only Odom knows what career path he should take at this point. The music industry doesn’t seem to be a good fit for him. If only he listened to Jay-Z earlier.
