Monta Ellis was one of the NBA's most exciting scorers during his playing days. Most fans remember him as Stephen Curry's former running mate during his early days with the Golden State Warriors, though.

Since he's been out of the league for quite some time, he has the hindsight to look back on his career. He's generally happy with how his career turned out, and he has choice words for how the league's top players have been performing so far.

According to The Athletic's Marcus Thompson II, he's teaching his kids and young players he's working with the fundamentals of the game.

“We all about the fundamentals of basketball,” Ellis said. “All that ol’ step back and all that, we ain’t doing that. We doing drop steps, rebounding, box outs. We do stuff like that. Man, my son right here now. That’s all he wants to do is do step-backs and all that old crap they see. … Man, that ain’t what it is. I got a lot of great kids that’s gon’ be talented. But the new NBA hinders them because they all want to do everything like the Trae Youngs and all that.”

It's not hard to see where Ellis is coming from. With players like Curry, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and LeBron James, highlight basketball is all the rage. It's understandable that every kid wants to take the game-winning shot and captivate with their incredible dribbling.

However, Ellis is doing the right thing by instilling the importance of fundamental basketball. After all, it's hard to win basketball games if no one's going to defend.
