The basketball world is in mourning along with Richard Jefferson and his family for the loss of his father. Richard Jefferson Sr died in a drive-by shooting in Compton, California on Wednesday night, per TMZ Sports.

Law enforcement tells us … 65-year-old Richard Jefferson Sr. was in front of a liquor store in a primarily residential area around 6:52 PM when a vehicle rolled up and someone inside opened fire.

Jefferson Sr. was struck multiple times in the torso. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sources say Jefferson Sr. was with 2 other men at the time of the shooting. It's unclear if Jefferson Sr. was the target.

TMZ Sports also notes that the Los Angeles Sheriff Department is still conducting investigations as to what happened and that Jefferson's camp has yet to make an official comment.

Born in South Central, Jefferson's parents separated when he was still a young boy. He grew up with his mother and stepfather as they moved to Phoenix when he was seven years old. His mother raised him along with his two brothers.

Jefferson, the 13th pick in the 2001 NBA Draft out of Arizona, won his first championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. He played for the Denver Nuggets last season.

Jefferson does not yet have a team for the upcoming 2018-19 season. SB Nation's NetsDaily reported that the 38-year-old is leaning toward a gig as an analyst for YES Network, the coverage team for Brooklyn Nets' games.
