The Dallas Mavericks have been a surprise contender in the Western Conference this season, and they are now looking to bolster their roster to improve their chances.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Mavs are seeking to clear a roster spot for trade flexibility and are in the market for a wing and a center.

Charania notes that Dallas could end up acquiring a big man off the waiver wire.

The Mavs are 28-16 on the season and have been riding a spectacular sophomore campaign from Luka Doncic, who has gone from a Rookie of the Year to a legitimate MVP candidate in a hurry.

However, in spite of the presence of Doncic and talented big Kristaps Porzingis, it does seem fairly obvious that the Mavs are lacking the overall firepower that some of the other top teams in the conference possess.

Dallas also lost forward Dwight Powell, who was a key member of the club's rotation, to a torn Achilles earlier this week, further compromising the roster.

The good news for the Mavs is they don't appear to be in any danger of falling out of the playoff picture regardless of whether or not they make a move.

The Mavericks are currently fifth in the West and are eight games in front of the ninth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies, so, chances are, Dallas will be back in the postseason for the first time since 2016.

Doncic and Co. most recently defeated the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night and will take on the Utah Jazz on Saturday.
