The Atlanta Hawks have a wealth of picks in the 2019 draft. They will select twice in the lottery at spots eight and ten, as well as three times in the second round. Unfortunately for the team, the lottery balls didn't fall in their favor to allow them to pick in the top three spots. Jeremy Woo of Sports Illustrated reported that Atlanta will look to get one of these higher picks via trade:
“According to league sources, Atlanta has been angling to move up in the draft by packaging their various picks.”
The Hawks are in a pretty good spot. Their young talent showed growth in a season where they never expected to seriously contend. Trae Young, Kevin Huerter, and John Collins all look like solid building blocks on the road back to relevance.
If the Hawks could add one of the top three picks, they could potentially have a cheap, young core for at least a few seasons.
Article Continues BelowPresumably, the New Orleans Pelicans have no plans to swap their first pick to the Hawks. At this point, Atlanta probably doesn't have the chips to acquire what is essentially Zion Williamson.
However, there is a chance that the Memphis Grizzlies or New York Knicks will consider giving up their spot for a grouping of the Hawk's selections.
The Hawks are on the way back to becoming a threat in the Eastern Conference. A player like Ja Morant or R.J. Barrett could accelerate the process. Expect to see the Hawks make some draft day moves.
