If Atlanta Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk thinks that his team is grooming the next Stephen Curry of the NBA in the form of rookie Trae Young, then it’s not going according to his plan so far because the former Oklahoma Sooners star looks more like he’s the second coming of Emmanuel Mudiay than the Golden State Warriors guard based on his shooting form in the ongoing Summer League.
Back in Young’s Summer League debut last Monday against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Hawks’ rookie finished with 16 points but shot just 4-for-20 from the field and 1-for-11 from deep. The following day, Young went 5-for-16 from the floor and converted just one of his five 3-point attempts, finishing with only 12 points against the San Antonio Spurs. Not even a full day of rest on Wednesday did the trick for Young, as he returned to the floor Thursday only to shoot an atrocious 3-for-16 line while missing seven of his eight dials from long distance before concluding his night with 10 points.
Granted that a player’s career can’t be defined solely by his performance in a Summer League campaign, it’s still quite depressing to see Trae Young botch a bunch of shots he used to make back in Norman. When asked about his woeful shooting the past few days, Young said that playing a different environment could be the cure to his offensive malady, per Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Hawks have played all three of their games in the Summer League at Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, but they’re going to see action next in Las Vegas this Saturday against the New York Knicks.
