Kyrie Irving could soon be locked into a long-term deal with the Boston Celtics, now having dealt with the underlying impediment keeping him from being at full strength.

The 26-year-old point guard underwent season-ending knee surgery to remove debris from his 2015 procedure, making it the right time to discuss an extension with the team that traded for him last summer.

via ESPN Insider Bobby Marks:

“Now entering the offseason, an extension should be a discussion point for the Celtics and Irving,” wrote Marks. “A possible four-year, $107 million extension is $80 million less than what Irving can receive from Boston as a free agent and $30 million less than another team could offer.”

“Coming off left knee surgery in 2015 and this past April, there is a risk for Irving to play out the remainder of his contract. While there is a safety net in his $21.3 million player option in 2019-20 in case he suffers another injury, locking in $107 million guaranteed reduces the risk in case of another setback.”

Irving's looming extension could also play a part on whether the team is able to keep point guard Marcus Smart, after the aforementioned believes he should earn more than double his 2018-19 salary for his services.

It will also play a part in keeping young Terry Rozier down the stretch, coming off a brilliant postseason before falling a game short of making the NBA Finals in a devastating Game 7 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night.

Irving is surely the centerpiece of this roster, but the Celtics will have to start thinking not only about Smart and Rozier, but other impending free agents in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who have clearly become rotation players.
