Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks has opened up about the rumors linking San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich taking over the reins as the Nets' new head coach for next season.
Marks has poured some cold water on what has become quite a hot topic of late. According to the high-ranking Nets executive, the team's front office has no intention to lure Popovich from the Spurs:
“Pop has a job; so I’ll say that,” Marks said on WFAN, via Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “And, obviously we all know he’s an amazing, amazing coach, and to be quite frank, an even better leader. So, I’ll let Pop continue to coach for the Spurs. He owes it to them and they owe it to him. I’m sure he’s quite happy there.”

We should always take such statements with a grain of salt. The whispers about Brooklyn's new head coach has been getting louder and louder of late, especially after the Nets were swept by the defending champs, the Toronto Raptors, in the first round of the playoffs. It's hard to imagine Gregg Popovich coaching any other team but the Spurs, and naturally, Brooklyn will deny such rumors. However, we have seen crazier things happen in the past.
Aside from Greg Popovich, however, there are a number of high-profile names also being linked to the Nets. Tyronn Lue appears to be the front-runner for the job opening right now, with guys like Jason Kidd also in the picture. Current interim coach Jacque Vaughn also appears to have gotten into the good graces of the Nets front office and is reportedly also being considered on a more permanent basis.
Expect the Nets to make a splash this offseason with their highly-anticipated decision on their new coach, as this team hopes to mount a serious challenge for the title next year.
